Grey Reusable CPAP Filters
If your CPAP unit has a grey reusable filter, you should remove it weekly and clean it thoroughly. If you live in a home with dust, pets, or smoking you should clean it more frequently as this filters cleanliness affects proper airflow into the CPAP machine. Cleaning the reusable filter is easy. Simply rinse it out with warm water, allow it to dry completely then reinsert it back into the CPAP machine As a general rule, the grey reusable CPAP filters last around six months. They should, however be replaced sooner if they appear brown and dingy, even after a thorough cleaning.
White Disposable Paper CPAP Filters
As mentioned above, nearly all CPAP units feature a white paper filter that is disposable. Most often these filters are designed to last about a month. However, like the grey reusable filters, if you live in a home with pets, dust, or smoke, you should increase the replacement interval on these filters.
Cleaning the CPAP Machine Itself
Cleaning the exterior of the CPAP is generally not required for the proper operation and maintenance of the machine. However, it is advisable to wipe down the unit with a damp cloth and some mild non fragrant detergent whenever the filters are cleaned or changed.
