One great advancement in CPAP humidifier technology is the fact that nearly all CPAP machines come standard with a heated humidification system. Designed to keep the mouth and nasal passages from drying out during the night and the resulting discomfort and inflammation, CPAP humidifiers are now a key component to a comfortable and effective CPAP therapy experience. However, given that the humidifier deals with water and heat, it is no secret that it is a component of the CPAP machine that requires daily attention and cleaning. So, how do you properly clean and maintain the heated humidification system in your CPAP machine? Well, let’s dive into a quick and easy guide!

Check The Manual for The Model CPAP Machine You Own

While cleaning most components of CPAP machines is pretty standard, we recommend that you read the manual for the particular model that you own. In any event, the information contained in the manual supersedes anything you may read elsewhere.

Daily Cleaning of Your CPAP Humidifier

First, remove the chamber from the humidifier carefully so that water doesn’t enter your CPAP machine. Once removed, wash out the chamber with a mild detergent and distilled water. Be sure to not use tap water as it contains minerals and chemicals that can damage machine components. Rinse well and lay out to dry on a clean or paper towel. Make sure that the chamber isn’t set in direct sunlight.

When ready to use, refill the chamber with distilled water and not tap water for the same reasons mentioned above.

Weekly Cleaning of Your CPAP Humidifier

Once a week, the CPAP humidifier chamber should be soaked in a solution of one part vinegar to three parts water for 15-20 minutes before being rinsed in distilled water. While some humidifier chambers are dishwasher safe and can be cleaned that way, consult the manual for your particular model to be sure.

How Long Does The CPAP Humidifier Chamber Last?

As a general rule, the CPAP humidifier chamber lasts about six months and should be replaced at that interval. Of course, if needed, it can be replaced sooner depending on use, wear, and condition.

See? It’s simple to keep your CPAP humidifier in tip top shape! All it takes is making it a morning routine to spend a few minutes to properly clean and inspect it. Want more comfort for your CPAP experience? Give our CPAP Comfort mask sealant and conditioner a try!
